Volunteer program 2025 (from April till October)

Figueirinha voluntarias

Would you like to live for a while in the countryside, to experience pure fresh air and be in a place that cherishes nature?

If your answer is yes, we count on you! We will share all our knowledge, everything we learned since we left the city, around eleven years ago, and since Figueirinha Ecoturismo became our home and the home of those who stay with us.

During this year (2025) we will accept volunteers that don’t mind sharing with us all the tasks of a rural tourism, from receiving guests to cook in the community kitchen, from taking care of a vegetable garden and the garden, to help with the compost, the biological swimming-pool, the dry toilets, and the chicken coop.

What do we ask of you: community spirit, exchange of know-how, good temper, sense of humour and collaboration for 4 hours a day.

What do we offer: two days off per week, lodging (it can be shared with another person) in a big tent and a shared toilet, food, the use of a bike and free wi-fi
Minimum stay: 3 weeks
Maximum stay: 3 months (that can be more if we really get along)

SWEET DREAMS

The access to the property and the garden is through a wrought iron gate designed by a friend of the family (Mário). On the right side, facing south is the century-old house where the owners of the hill live and where the family room is.

LIVING

A community kitchen was built around the ancient wooden oven, where in the old days people from the valley used to bake bread. Whoever then the Portuguese to develop human relationships around a great plate of food?

FIGUEIRINHA ECOSYSTEM

We grow a biological vegetable garden for our own consumption. Cabbages, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, leaks, beets, onions, courgettes are a few examples of what we have in our land, depending of course on the season.

WHERE YOU CAN FIND US

Located only 25 km from Vila Nova de Milfontes and from Vicentina Coast, Figueirinha Ecoturismo is part of Odemira region and Relíquias administration. The closest village, Monte da Estrada, is distant 2.8 km on a dirt road.

"The memories we made here will be cherished in our family forever! This was a wonderful paradise for us. We will be back for sure. Thank you for all the wonderful food and talks. Love always"

ACTIVITIES

We help you book the activity you want

Hiking Trails

Among cork and olive trees we have marked two walking trails to discover this still pure and beautiful landscape. Also Rota Vicentina Association has marked a hiking trail that one can choose from 6, 8 to 13 km that leads to the hill where a small chapel calls for worship to Nª Senhora das Neves. Here one can have a magnificent view from 277 meters high. In São Luís (12 km) the hikers can catch the Historical Path and in Vila Nova de Milfontes (25 km) the Fishermens Trail, both part of the hiking trails also developed by the association.

Horse Riding

Monte da Barbanxa only 2 km from São Luís and 10 km from Figueirinha Ecoturismo, offer several experiences even to the less experienced. Rides, advanced riding lessons, therapeutic riding and pony lessons for the smaller crowd. If you wish we can help you organize your visit.

Cycling

Besides the walking trails marked by Figueirinha Ecoturismo that can be also be done by bike, there are a number of dirt roads that one can use to discover the region. For those who prefer a bigger challenge we recommend Rota Vicentina off road cycling trails, one of which has a higher degree of difficulty and goes by our rural tourism, where one can also find a Bike Station, and through Nª Senhora das Neves.

Canoeing down river Mira

Canoeing or kayak down river Mira is an experience not to be missed for those who are visiting the SW of Portugal. Ecotrails and Figueirinha Ecoturismo invite you to come and visit the tranquil waters of the Mira, experience its biodiversity and discover the different scenarios that vary according to the tides. From the river estuary in Vila Nova de Milfontes to Odemira or Casa Branca, an old wheat shipment wharf.
